Eddie Hearn has found his answer to replicate Dana White's UFC model in boxing

Eddie Hearn has made no secret of his objectives; to take over boxing and install a UFC-style model.

Dana White’s monopoly on the top level of MMA has seen him install a system which gives the company total control over match-making and a centralised structure.

Boxing, on the other hand, has forever been a game as much about politics as in-ring ability.

There are a growing number of world title belts, governing bodies and rival promoters all with a slice of the pie, much to the frustration of Hearn.

Speaking as he plotted Fight Camp last month, Hearn told iFL TV: “The drive for me, my plan is to control boxing. That is the only way I see 100% pure success in my head, to control this sport globally and have a single entity running boxing like the UFC.

“I want to change the sport for the better and the only way I can get the sport to where I wanted to be is to have that model like the UFC.

“The UFC is the model, the UFC leads the way. The UFC doesn’t have the history of the sport of boxing, but I believe with the right model we can outperform the UFC. We’re a bigger sport than UFC but they have it right."

Most would doubt whether Hearn’s vision is ever possible - but he might have found his answer, with last night proving the litmus test.

Unlike many other promoters, Hearn has gone all-in on women’s boxing, leaving him in pole position to reap the rewards.

He landed Katie Taylor when the Irish icon turned professional and has quickly turned her into the undisputed lightweight world champion.

Last night, Terri Harper defended her world titles against Natasha Jonas as Hearn provided the first ever all-British female world title fight to headline his second Fight Camp card at Matchroom HQ in Brentwood.

Before the fight, an excited Harper told the Mirror: “Being under Matchroom, one of the best promotional boxing companies around, I believe the world is my oyster really.”

Just a day before Harper and Jonas did battle, Hearn had already set up the next fight for the winner by signing undefeated WBO Super-Featherweight World Champion Ewa Brodnicka to a multi-fight promotional deal.

“I’m delighted to team up with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing," said Brodnicka.

"Women’s boxing is on fire right now and I want to be in all the big fights starting with the unification match up between the winner of Harper and Jonas. I’m excited for the future and can’t wait for my return to the ring."

Taylor will face a rematch against Delphine Persoon on the final Fight Camp card, headlined by Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin.

Should Taylor win that match, then a huge domestic clash could be on the horizon with Chantelle Cameron, who was snapped up as Hearn’s latest big-name signing just last month and will fight for a world title herself next time out.

“Women’s boxing is growing,” Cameron says. “It’s getting bigger and better and it’s exciting to be involved.

“We’re making waves, there are going to be some great future match-ups, and I’m just really happy to be involved in that with Matchroom.”

Factor in undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus, rising British stars Savannah Marshall and Shannon Courtenay and more and it is clear Hearn is putting together a roster of the best female talent in the sport.

Like White has a monopoly over the top MMA fighters in his UFC promotion, Hearn is putting together similar in the women's ranks giving him free reign to create top class fights.

Whilst boxing has traditionally been a male-dominated sport, it is women’s boxing which has given Hearn the chance to break down barriers and implement his long-term vision for the sport in line with the UFC approach.

Harper vs Jonas was a litmus test to determine the level of current interest as Hearn looks to push ahead with his plans and determine if he can replicate UFC's success in marketing female fighters to generate the same interest as their male counterparts.

But it is easy to see why he has been won over by a refreshing approach of fighters simply determined to grasp whatever chances they get rather than being bogged down by politics.

Hearn told iFL TV last month: “I’m telling you now, if these women fighters continue to be fearless in terms of taking on the biggest challenges, in terms of fighting other champions, unifying immediately, searching for the undisputed, you are going to get parity so much quicker than you ever expected.

“This is what makes the sport great, it’s just making me fall in love with women’s boxing. These are great match-ups, they are high-level match-ups and they are entertaining, and they are fighters that don’t give a f***.”
